Planet Broadband

About Planet Broadband

Broadband has emerged as the most influential medium of communication since the invention of telephone, revolutionizing how people live, think, and do business — anywhere, anytime.

In Planet Broadband, Rouzbeh Yassini, the technologist known as the “father of the cable modem,” traces the origins and implications of this powerful global phenomenon.

Yassini’s observations address major cultural, social and technological contributions tied to what the author calls a “new alphabet” for humanity. From connected learning to virtual healthcare to big implications for remote working, the applications and possibilities brought forth by the connected broadband economy take center stage.

Published by Cisco Press in 2003 for broad audience including consumers, business and technical professionals, the book describes not just what broadband is, but why broadband matters to everyday people.

The book helps readers understand the trajectory of broadband communications and how individuals and organizations can profit and prosper from its rise to prominence. Written in an informal-but-informed voice, it begins with an observation about the modern broadband age. Each chapter discusses a key element or implication of the broadband era, including references to historical development, explanations of how it works, and discussions of its influence on various elements of society. The book includes anecdotes, quotations, and interview excerpts from recognizable leaders in business and government that reinforce the subject’s importance.

Planet Broadband was written by Rouzbeh Yassini, Ph.D., along with longtime business journalists Stewart W. Schley, Leslie Ellis and Roger Brown.
